No trip to Cuba was complete without a visit to the corner of Zulueta and Animas in Old Havana, the home of Sloppy Joe’s Bar. Owner Jose Garcia opened the bar in 1919, and while widely praised for his hospitality, wasn’t quite as concerned with appearances. In 1935, the Western States team was captured enjoying libations. From left to right in this photo are Eugene Roberts, an unnamed barkeep, “Sloppy Joe” Garcia, George Stevens, and Henry Echenique. With tourism returning to Cuba, the original Sloppy Joe’s was renovated and reopened in 2013.
