165 Western States, gave me an invaluable insight into controlling meetings and selling centrifugals. Of course weasel words don't work on their own and my technical process knowledge came from the late Mr. George Conrad of Western States. These two great men were my mentors, I was surely blessed. During the 80's and early 90's continuous centrifugal development was running hot. There were research programmes here in Australia carried out by CSR Milling Division, CSR Technical Services Division, Bureau of Sugar Experiment Station, Sugar Research Institute, University of Queensland, Pioneer Mills Ltd, Western States and Metric to evaluate and develop the CC machines. I had the opportunity to work with George and Jim in all of these research programmes and for the introduction of the first CC6 here in Australia at Pioneer Mill. Pioneer were rate limited by their Low Grade centrifugal station and were very keen to commit to the trials on the CC6. This was George Conrad's first trip to Australia, and without knowing the Mill or its people, on introduction, George announced to the Mill Manager and Production Manager that he could double the mills capacity on their existing station without the CC6, a bold statement I thought and I immediately wondered why we need such a man with a sales team. George, in fact, did this. The Mill purchased the CC6 in good faith and transferred some of their other CC machines within the Pioneer Group, my biggest ever learning curve, what a man. In later years at an ASSCT meeting George's work was slandered by some research personal in the main conference hall. George's work was fiercely defended by the Production Superintendent of Pioneer Mill, normally a very meek and mild man. I secured the trial of the first CC1300 in Australia at Invicta Mill, a dismal failure but the Mill offered to keep the machine in good faith. I declined their offer as this would only be bad publicity for WS for years to come. They purchased Broadbent machines. Trials for this machine were carried out by Craig Stevens of WS (George's replacement) and myself along with Invicta staff, after three weeks of long hours day by day, we called a halt and
