Roberts and Gibson accumulated several patents, and on July 15, 1908, convinced six investors to join them in a new venture, the Sugar Centrifugal Discharger Company of Salt Lake City. American Tool and Machine built the new company’s initial sugar dischargers, six of which were purchased by Utah and Idaho Sugar’s Garland, Utah factory for $50 each. What became known as the Roberts- Gibson discharger worked significantly better than the existing methods of the era.
