243 fittings, all pumps and motors, air compressors, a motor control center, a complete set of hand tools, and even the control room itself. The “shower” was, to say the least, unique. The “shower room” was an all tile room with an open, square basin about three feet wide by three feet tall and four feet deep which was filled with water from a faucet on the wall. The basin was kept full at all times and replenished from the wall tap. On the edge of the basin was a large plastic cup. You would take the cup, dip it into the basin, and pour water on yourself. I found the best technique was to take a deep breath, dip and pour and don’t stop. I later found out that this was pretty normal in some of the non-tourist hotels throughout Indonesia. — Bill Duersch CHEIL SUGAR, INCHEON, KOREA: When I commissioned an installation at Cheil Sugar, before we could put it into operation there was a ceremony to assure good fortune. They rolled in a table containing a huge roasted hog’s head and placed it directly in front of the centrifugals. Pieces of pig were carved off and everyone had some. They toasted the event with soju (Korea’s most popular alcoholic beverage), a white liquor about 40 proof that tasted sort of like paint thinner, served in stainless steel bowls which were passed around. After which they all wanted to go back to work. I was, at the time, rewiring a centrifugal control and opted to wait until the next day to finish. A drinking custom of the Koreans is to share glasses. When you empty your glass you set it in front of someone else. I figured the soju acted as a good antiseptic. — Bill Duersch WHAT’S YOUR NAME? With nicknames like Pappy Kessler, Goo Goo, Bad Dorf, Corky, Bun-Bun, Dirty Shirt, Butzy, Rooter, Gator the Crater, Buckey, Painter, Papa Claus, Motor Blocker, Cappy, Hosey, ‘Ole Paddle Foot, Skippy Peanut Butter, Rocky, The Butternut Gang, Preacher, The Parking Lot Attendant and Diddy Bob, be assured the manufacturing shop was the place to work hard, play hard, and definitely have fun. Rick shared, “There were people that I never knew their real names for the first eight or nine years that I worked here because there were so many nicknames. No one used their real names.” Gary added, “They called me ‘Painter’ because I did spray painting. Carl Schwartz, he thought for years, my last name was Painter.” — Rick Heitman and Gary Estes NEVER BET AGAINST GOO GOO One of our stories involves David “Goo Goo” Kuykendall whose nickname came from his love of Goo Goo Clusters. Goo Goo (Dave), with every new hire, would bet a quarter that he could win a staring contest. The first guy to blink had to buy coffee. Goo Goo and his opponent would sit down at the cafeteria table, face-to-face. Goo Goo closed one eye and kept the other eye open. The opponent, stared intently with both eyes wide open and eventually blinked. The hilarious part? Most of the new guys didn’t know Goo Goo had a glass eye. As a result, Goo Goo seldom, if ever, bought his own cup of coffee! — Dave Meyer, Gary Estes and Bob Leonhardt
