George accepted the coveted Sugar Industry Technologist (S.I.T.) Crystal Award for Achievement in 1992 in Brussels, Belgium. 1992 was an especially bright year for Western States when George Conrad received the prestigious Crystal Award from the Sugar Industry Technologists (S.I.T.) in Brussels, Belgium. George Conrad, Chief Sugar Technologist and successor to George Stevens began “his love affair with centrifugals on April 1, 1965 when he joined Western States. He traveled the world (more than 30 countries and all continents), visiting sugar-related people, installations and institutes. Conrad’s ultimate goal – to provide a better understanding of the principles and application of batch and continuous centrifugals, as production tools for sugar crystal recovery, and to improve their performance. Equally important, was his assistance he gave to designers to develop better and more efficient equipment. Conrad was most proud of his contributions through his centrifugation lectures at Nicholls State University Cane Sugar Refiners Institute since its inception in 1978 and at the Raw Cane Sugar Manufacturers Institute” (excerpt from the Sugar Journal, June 1992, page 3).
