219 The first commercial plantings of Curly Top tolerant varieties, developed through a joint effort of Spreckels Sugar Co. and the USDA, were successful. These varieties, along with others, were used throughout the Western United States. This was the beginning of the domestic seed industry. Today, Spreckels Sugar® Company, is a subsidiary of Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative and is the producer of Spreckels Sugar products. The Spreckels Sugar® labels are primarily marketed in the western half of the United States. Spreckels Sugar operates one beet sugar factory located in Brawley, California, and a beet seed processor located in Sheridan, Wyoming. Spreckels has been supplying sugar products to consumers and customers for over 100 years.
