A little on the light side. I traveled with Jim and George to The New Zealand Lactose Company. We landed in Auckland, rented a car and drove to New Plymouth for our meeting. We left the airport for the long drive south. Twenty minutes into our trip, we stopped at a petrol station to get some coffee and food. George and I went into the store whilst Jim stayed outside for a cigarette. I pointed out to George that there was a free drinking glass with every twenty dollars’ worth of fuel purchased at all Shell petrol stations throughout the country. George could not resist such an offer and set about calculating exactly how far we would need to go between fuel stops to spend the required twenty dollars and collect a free glass. He actually got quite excited as we neared the required miles needed for the twenty dollars’ worth of fuel and the glass. Jim was seated in the back of the car and with his less than perfect hearing had missed the reasons that we were stopping so regularly for fuel. Nearing night fall, with all businesses closing at 6.00pm in New Zealand at that time, George wanted me to stop for fuel but I didn't think we would spend the twenty dollars so I said that I think we could go a little further yet. At this time, Jim, the switched on sales guy in the back, had realized that we were stopping for fuel frequently and thought that our rental car was a gas guzzler. Hearing our "will we stop or won't we stop" conversation, Jim yelled at us to get some 168 fuel now and don't take the chance of running out of fuel as he did not want to be pushing the car later. When we went over the free glass offer with Jim, he refused to speak to us for several hours. George laughed and we continued on our way to collect the six piece set that he wanted. George could not resist a bargain! We were traveling through the country about 35 years ago when George saw a road side stall selling pineapples, 5 for $1.00. He immediately demanded that I stop as he had never seen pineapples so cheap, he negotiated a better deal for $10.00 worth. Not all that strange really, other than the fact that he was leaving for the USA the next morning. I think we ate the last one yesterday. CHAPTER 13
