117 A Time of Change Western States experienced many operational and personnel changes in the 1990s. Forty-two-year employee Bob Jones retired as President and CEO in 1991, only the fifth person to serve in that role in the Company’s history. Western States employees who served under Jones typically described him as more of a friend than their boss. His regular walks through the Company’s departments, friendly conversations, and willingness to listen endeared him to the team. Managers appreciated his professional approach and the fact that he encouraged them to speak their minds and ran meetings efficiently and effectively. His tenure included many of the Company’s profitable years, as well as some of its most challenging as it ventured into new industries. Robert M. Jones
